Children’s Services Assistant Job Description
Part Time – $16 per hour, no benefits / Approximately 12 hours per week including evening and weekend hours.
The Lansdowne Public Library seeks an enthusiastic Assistant for its active Children’s Department. The successful candidate will have a passion for enriching the lives of children through providing beneficial literary recommendations, participating in a wide variety of library programs, and acting as a vital resource for parents/guardians. The Children’s Services Assistant works under the supervision of the Head of Children’s Services.
Duties and Responsibilities include:
- Acting as assistant to Children’s Librarian
- Participating in youth library programs, including occasional assistance with story times as needed
- Maintaining shelf order including shelving books and shelf-reading throughout the children’s library
- Greeting patrons upon entry and assisting them as needed
- Assisting patrons in choosing reading material or in locating information
- Helping maintain the neatness and appearance of the children’s library, which may require light cleaning and tidying
- Being aware of patrons/activities in the children’s library, including the ebb and flow of patrons needing assistance
- Helping maintain the security of library resources
- Occasionally assisting with offsite outreach events (nights and weekends)
- Circulation duties as needed
- Assisting with weeding projects
- Attending regular trainings, workshops and staff meetings/in-services as assigned
- Maintaining a professional appearance, including appropriate attire and grooming
- Other duties as assigned by the Head of Children’s Services, Library Director, and/or Circulation Manager
Projected Typical Weekly Schedule (following the completion of a brief, paid shadowing period):
Wed: 4-8 pm / Thu: 3-7 pm / Sat: TBD (4 hours)
Requirements, Knowledge & Abilities:
- Minimum of a High School Diploma or equivalent
- Ability to work both under direct supervision and more independently
- Hiring is contingent on satisfactory passage of PA Criminal History and Child Abuse Clearances (and for those having lived outside of Pennsylvania in the last 10 years, an FBI background check)
- Our screening process includes professional references and checks
- Ability to provide outstanding customer service to every patron who enters the department
- Strong attention to detail
- Willingness to partner with other departments within the library
- Ability to handle general library circulation duties, or possess the ability to be trained
- Knowledge of current trends in children’s literature
- Ability to understand and follow instructions and communicate effectively
- Enthusiasm for providing excellent patron service
- Ability to work well with staff and patrons of all ages
- Ability to exercise mature, independent judgement and be self-motivated
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills
- Capable with computers and technology
- Must be adaptable and able to occasionally adjust scheduled hours
Physical Demands:
- Moderate physical effort is occasionally required to perform duties under typical work conditions
Compensation: $16/hr, no benefits
